Amazon Unveils New AI Wearables That Listen to Conversations to Boost Shopping
Amazon’s official expansion of its hardware ecosystem includes the development of two ambient artificial intelligence devices: Bee Frontier and Bee Eclipse. The two devices have been developed under the bee brand owned by Amazon and include the wristband priced at $74.99 (Bee Frontier) and magnetic phone attachment priced at $99.99 (Bee Eclipse).
These two devices record, transcribe and analyze real-life spoken conversations for the purpose of gaining contextual consumer data which is used for e-commerce recommendations. The hardware works by recording real-time conversations and generating notes, events, and tasks based on the conversation once it is switched on. It is linked to third-party productivity tools such as Google Calendar, Gmail, and Microsoft Outlook and also Amazon’s updated Alexa+.
The information regarding mentioned objects, meetings and even preferences in products from the conversations is extracted and used by Amazon’s online store algorithms for making product recommendations. Concerning issues of data security and consent of bystanders, Amazon developed the Bee Private Compute architecture.
The system is based on processing audio in a hardware enclave, where the raw audio files are deleted right after the text transcriptions and are encrypted with user device keys. However, digital privacy activists point out the fact that entrusting ordinary people with the task of passive ambient recording bears some risks of consent and surveillance issues.
The launches highlight an important trend concerning the development of ambient AI hardware capable of transforming the offline communication between people into a stream of digital data inputs. In the quest for post-smartphone interfaces, the coupling of passive audio input and cloud-based retailing platforms becomes an opportunity for hardware companies to monetize people’s communication.
Amazon’s new generation of Bee wearables signals the company’s intentions to enter the field of ambient audio capture and introduces a new standard for AI hardware integration of offline communication into direct digital commerce. The coupling of the passive audio hardware with the retail supply chain becomes the way to create a seamless pipeline from intent to purchase.
