Talk Your Way: Apple Grants Testers Full Control Over Siri’s Speed and Emotion

An overly robotlike and quick-speaking voice from a digital assistant can easily make a convenient product become a nuisance. Understanding this, Apple has launched an unprecedented update of its smart assistant. Now, iPhone owners in iOS 27 developer beta 3 version can personalize Siri by adjusting the pace and expressiveness of the voice of the assistant.

Initially hinted at as “coming soon” after its first announcement, now the tech company is offering two long-awaited sliders for audio adjustments, which are called Pace and Expressivity. Located in the system’s settings, they allow people to adjust the speech of the generative AI voice of the digital assistant.

Using the Pace slider, one can change the speaking pace, while the Expressivity slider is used for changing the expressiveness of the assistant’s voice so that it would not sound either too flat or too enthusiastic. In order to ensure users get the right audio mix for their needs, Siri will read out preview phrases such as “you have one new message” as the sliders are being moved.

This allows the user to immediately hear how the voice has changed and decide whether to save the changes or not. However, it should be pointed out that such sophisticated voice processing requires powerful hardware and can currently only be found on Apple devices equipped with the top-of-the-line A19 Pro chip and having no less than 12 GB of RAM (Random Access Memory).

The update arrives within the framework of a major overhaul of the entire Siri experience in the direction of generative artificial intelligence technology. Competing systems from OpenAI, such as ChatGPT, still provide more extensive personality filters, such as setting the AI (Artificial Intelligence) voice to be either professional or quirky. Yet, Apple’s sliders bring about a huge revolution in terms of accessibility of native on-device features.
