Hugging Face Explores Potential Sale at Rumored $13 Billion Valuation
Underlining the increasing importance of AI developer platforms, Hugging Face, an open-source repository firm, is believed to be looking to sell itself for about $13 billion.
The New York-based firm has brought investment bankers on board to gauge interest from potential buyers in the tech world, after its $4.5 billion valuation, announced during a Series D fundraising exercise in 2023.
There is no identified buyer as the negotiations are still at a very preliminary stage. Hugging Face raised $235 million three years ago, backed by venture capital firm Salesforce Ventures along with other tech firms such as Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Intel, IBM, and Qualcomm.
The ongoing negotiation is a reflection of the business war in artificial intelligence that has not only extended to the development of advanced models but also distribution channels.
The “GitHub of AI” is said to house more than 3 million public models, 1 million applications, and 500,000 datasets for an estimated 13 million users. Instead of investing billions in proprietary large language models, the platform becomes the neutral platform that connects developers to the open-weight software and earns money through enterprise hosting, compute power, and model deployment routing.
The buyout news comes amid a pattern of consolidation within the technology sector focused on the infrastructure for developers. Recently, for example, model-routing platform OpenRouter was acquired by payment processing giant Stripe for $7.5 billion.
On the other hand, there is a problem of neutrality due to the potential sale. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue has repeatedly refused big single-investment stake offers. For example, the company was offered a $7 billion valuation by Nvidia; however, its neutrality remained unshakable.
Having control over the gateway to the open-weight models becomes extremely important now. Due to the fierce competition between corporate buyers for developer mindshare, the decision of Hugging Face will decide whether the infrastructure of OpenAI will remain neutral or not.
