Instagram Cracks Down on Undisclosed AI Profiles by Cutting Algorithmic Reach
Social networking becomes more complicated as synthesized personalities become hard to tell apart from the virtual avatars created by actual people. Instagram decided to introduce an update to its policies in response to increased concerns of users regarding fake AI influencers and promised reach penalties for accounts that do not disclose their artificiality.
In this context, the company decided to rename the current “AI Creator” label to “AI-generated profile.” According to the new naming conventions, users will be able to see if the profile is built around a synthesized personality at first glance, whether it is in the header, in search results, or in comment threads.
Voluntarily adding the tag will not prevent the accounts from functioning without any problems and losing distribution; however, those that try to represent synthetic personalities as real human beings will have their content marked as non-recommendable and lose access to distribution platforms such as Reels and the Explore Page.
The update of the policies was prompted by the recent media exposure of network clusters of synthesized personalities used in promotions, which included wellness gurus and even computer-generated influencers.
However, Instagram observed that audience feedback was the deciding factor in creating this policy because audience research had shown that people felt irritated when they discovered that they had followed or engaged with a machine-driven account posing as a person.
Crucially, Meta has made sure to make a distinction between synthetic identities and creation tools that allow creators to edit photos, scripts, or backgrounds using generative AI software. If such a creator has a real-life identity, he/she will not have to put the label at the profile level.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to hide synthetic identities on social media feeds for digital marketers. By going after the recommendation algorithms and not banning the accounts altogether, Instagram is forcing everyone to be transparent if they want to grow their audience organically as synthetic influencers.
