Meta’s Bold Forecast: Mark Zuckerberg Envisions Billions Using Personal AI Agents Within Five Years
CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., Mark Zuckerberg, has made his biggest bet on artificial intelligence yet, as he sees billions of people using personal AI assistants within the next five years.
During an earnings call for the second quarter, the tech titan mentioned the near future of autonomous digital assistants who will be working nonstop to handle finances, health schedules, house cleaning tasks, and even help build relationships.
Unlike basic chatbots answering user queries based on triggers, Zuckerberg sees these AI agents as goal-oriented programs helping users to achieve their aims on their behalf. Zuckerberg pointed out Meta’s communication networks, particularly WhatsApp and Messenger, as the main platforms where everyday users will meet their personal AI.
As AI assistants working in business are already available on these platforms, scaling personal AI assistants to billions of users will become the backbone of Meta’s long-term product plans. But achieving the ambitious dream doesn’t come cheaply. The intense spending on data centers and computer infrastructures has led to an almost 91% plunge in free cash flow to $784 million, along with a $4.6 billion quarterly operating loss in its Reality Labs Hardware division.
The heavy capex took Meta’s shares down almost 10 percent after-hours, which shows that the Street is still skeptical about big investments until there are some revenues to come. Explaining the company’s strategy, Zuckerberg said that the ability to control new AI software brings much better margins than just leasing the server capacity to competitors.
With millions of daily users on both Instagram and WhatsApp, Meta has an advantage in terms of distribution compared to the competition, such as Google and OpenAI. While scared investors will be horrified by the huge amount of expenses for developing new technologies, Zuckerberg’s five-year vision sends a message to the market.
