OpenAI Launches Tailored ChatGPT Experience for Teens With Enhanced Safety Controls
Millions of younger students already use generative artificial intelligence for school assignments, creativity, and personal questions. With safety in mind, OpenAI has developed ChatGPT for Teens and officially released it as a part of their primary product specifically designed for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 years old.
This update includes automatic account routing based on self-reported date of birth during account creation and age-detection technology which uses the way people ask questions to recognize whether they are teenagers. After being recognized as a teenager, accounts become a part of the teen experience.
In addition, guardrails are put in place to ensure that there will be no conversations involving suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, as well as romantic and sexual topics. Moreover, the underlying model will not be able to claim any kind of sentience or emotional awareness, thus reducing the chance of digital dependency.
For the sake of educational development of students without using easy ways out, OpenAI has implemented Study Mode which guides students through school problems one by one.
Regarding family management, opt-in parental controls enable the guardians to connect their accounts and create “Quiet Hours” or “Study Hours,” which will limit the availability of the app during sleep hours or family time. The parents will also get automated safety warnings in rare cases where there are issues of critical well-being.
The official roll-out follows months of scrutiny, legislation, and lawsuits regarding the dangers posed by AI safety risks and academic integrity. Though some critics say that these measures should have been put in place long ago because of the huge number of ChatGPT users, OpenAI believes that adapting the platform to suit the development of adolescents is vital.
