In its efforts towards modernization of defense operations through enterprise technology, the Department of Defense has now successfully incorporated customized versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok into the central artificial intelligence network of GenAI.mil. 

This has provided over 3 million military and civilian government personnel with authorized access to advanced language models while keeping sensitive government information safe. With the help of Impact Level 5 (IL5) cloud security measures, both ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are cleared for processing Controlled Unclassified Information. 

The isolation of the portal ensures that no sensitive information is fed into any commercial public model or training database, resolving the significant privacy bottleneck for government workers. ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government perform different functions in military processes on a day-to-day basis. 

While ChatGPT Mil is used for unclassified administrative work in the form of document analysis, policy creation, file management, and logistics planning through custom GPTs, xAI’s Grok for Government, in collaboration with SpaceX’s Starshield department, is used for inference and reasoning in operational settings for acquisition market research and logistics

These models join Google’s Gemini, which made its debut on the platform in December. Notably missing from the list is Anthropic’s Claude due to unresolved legal issues related to Defense Department safety standards and supply chain designation.

Usage by military services has become quite fast-tracked. Within just nine months since its launch, GenAI.mil has been adopted by more than 1.7 million unique users. The Pentagon described the multi-vendor arrangement as a strategic effort to ensure that there is no reliance on a particular software provider, with technology partners including Microsoft, AWS, and Nvidia.

It shows how multiple frontier models could be integrated into military administration systems, illustrating how federal departments could leverage consumer software innovations safely.
