Anthropic Combines Claude Chat and Cowork Into Unified Workplace Interface

Anthropic has officially merged its Claude Chat and agentic Cowork features into a single, unified interface across desktop, mobile, and web. The consolidation eliminates manual mode toggles, allowing the AI system to automatically route user requests—ranging from simple queries to multi-step autonomous projects—within a single conversation window. The update is currently rolling out to paid Claude Pro and Max subscribers.

Under the new operational architecture, Claude evaluates user prompts and dynamically executes required background capabilities, such as web searching, code execution, and data retrieval via connected apps like Slack, Google Drive, and Gmail. Along with the interface merger, Anthropic launched “Claude Docs” and “Claude Slides” in beta, enabling users to generate, edit, and export shareable documents and presentation decks directly inside their active chat threads.

Prior to this rollout, users frequently faced confusion choosing between distinct environments for quick conversations versus complex multi-step assignments. By automating task routing and maintaining persistent context across sessions, Anthropic aims to reduce friction while expanding background cloud processing so long-running agentic tasks continue executing even after users close their browsers.

This interface unification reflects a broader strategy across the generative AI sector to transform standalone chatbots into end-to-end workspace operating systems. As frontier labs compete aggressively for enterprise market share, streamlining multi-modal workflows and background automation has become central to driving daily user retention.

The implementation of this, done holistically by Anthropic, forms the basis of an integrated workspace, which will make it possible for the emergence of totally self-reliant AI systems within companies. Furthermore, the integration of background processing and application integration into one operating dashboard makes it easy for non-technical people in business entities to manage multistep digital processes. The restructuring of the architecture guarantees the elimination of software fatigue and the optimization of software development.
