WhatsApp Tests Chat Theme Syncing for Shared Messaging Backgrounds

WhatsApp is building a customization option that will allow users to share chat themes between one-on-one chats and group chats. This utility has been discovered on the WhatsApp beta app for iOS build 26.37.10.16 through TestFlight.

With this update, an individual can share their own chosen wallpaper, chat bubble color, and even photo gallery background. Once implemented, the proposed update will be capable of modifying the look of the interface of a chat without any manual configuration by the participant.

System notifications will be sent to the participants when any theme changes, but the user has the full authority to modify the shared theme. Most importantly, the sharing of the themes will be encrypted at all costs. Such an upgrade to the features is a part of Meta’s larger push towards modernization of engagement and alignment between its messaging apps.

In standardizing the visual themes of all the participants in a conversation, WhatsApp closes the gap with other applications such as Instagram Direct and Messenger by making conversations visually coherent spaces.

The feature has been rolled out only for developers who use the iOS version for now, but it is expected that this will be available for broader public tests and eventually for all users across the world. The process will help Meta engineers receive user feedback and resolve device synchronization problems.

Moreover, the creation of consistent visual themes paves the way for greater interactive customizability within the entire software ecosystem of Meta. The platform ensures that the user remains engaged in conversations with aesthetically pleasing visuals while maintaining their privacy.
