AI Giant Anthropic Selects Nasdaq for Record Public Market Debut
One of the major players in artificial intelligence, Anthropic, has officially chosen Nasdaq as its platform for the anticipated IPO. The maker of Claude AI aims for an October listing valued at around $2 trillion, with whispers of a funding goal of up to $100 billion that may become one of the biggest in history.
For Nasdaq, this marks yet another major success story this year after securing a $1.75 trillion public listing of SpaceX. This marks another huge accomplishment in its competition with New York Stock Exchange for listing fast-growing companies in technology.
In order to attract tech mega-caps, Nasdaq made changes in its criteria for being included in indexes, reducing the period before which companies can be added to the Nasdaq-100 index from three months to 15 days of trading. At the same time, Nvidia reportedly considers joining as the anchor investor and providing up to $10 billion equity investment to gain access to computing.
Anthropic’s pursuit of public markets takes place in a particular strategic time frame for the generative AI space. Competing company OpenAI has announced its decision to put off its public market debut amid market instability and fears regarding AI safety. In contrast, Anthropic is speeding up its efforts to ensure long-term capital allocation for heavy investment in computing power needs.
The historic debut reflects a trend whereby private mega-cap companies are increasingly using public equity markets to raise unprecedented amounts to invest in infrastructure. Being able to access public markets enables frontier laboratories to build out enormous data centers and deploy custom chips.
Choosing to list on Nasdaq has set an example for future tech companies, showing that public markets are eager to provide financing for costly equipment needs for frontier artificial intelligence research.
