Nvidia Explores Unprecedented $250 Billion Financial Guarantee for OpenAI Mega Data Center Project
In a remarkable financial maneuver that could change the future of how AI infrastructure is created, tech giant Nvidia is reportedly considering an incredible $250 billion financial guarantee that will back OpenAI. The potential backing is set to give OpenAI permission to lease the enormous 10-gigawatt data center facility that is currently under construction in Piketon, Ohio, by SoftBank’s SB Energy division.
The projected cost of the monstrous complex, which used to be a nuclear uranium enrichment facility, is said to be well beyond $500 billion when all the high-performance hardware is installed at the facility. With OpenAI still being a high-cost entity with no formal credit rating, it becomes difficult for the lender to invest in the huge capital expenditure requirement directly.
Through its rock-solid balance sheet, Nvidia is helping SoftBank secure financing on much better terms. Though the $250 billion guarantee includes lease obligations and structural construction debt, it does not cover the microchips intended to operate within the building. For this reason, Nvidia is in discussions regarding the possibility of another deal worth $350 billion to help finance the purchase of processors.
Opening the first phase of the 800-megawatt capacity of the Ohio campus in 2028, Nvidia will use the power infrastructure obtained via an international trade agreement between the U.S. and Japan, supervised by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
The acquisition of the land is a vital step for OpenAI in shifting its dependence from third-party cloud providers, such as Microsoft and Oracle, towards establishing its computing infrastructure. Nvidia is guaranteed a steady flow of orders for its unique silicon designs for many years.
Such a debt-structuring approach proves that hardware industry players are moving way past selling chips and financing the physical infrastructure for artificial intelligence developments. By guaranteeing their major customers huge investments in real estate and electricity infrastructure, Nvidia is making sure that the AI revolution will not slow down any time soon.
