Samsung Forecasts 19-Fold Profit Surge as AI Fuels Massive Chip Demand
The competition between major companies around the world for artificial intelligence has led to an unprecedented financial turnaround for one of the most popular technology companies on the planet.
Samsung Electronics has released its earnings report, and the electronics giant is projecting that its second-quarter operating profit will increase by a staggering 1,810 percent from last year. In order to explain what this means, it must be stated that operating profit is the income derived from a firm’s core operations before taking into account interest and taxes.
The operating profit for the April-June quarter is projected to be 89.4 trillion won, which comes out to about $58.4 billion. To put this into perspective, the operating profit for this one quarter surpasses the operating profit of the last three years.
The driving force behind such a sudden increase is the semiconductor market. All technology companies around the globe are constructing huge artificial intelligence data centers, and hence, there is a huge demand for memory chips from these manufacturers.
The huge supply shortage is allowing Samsung to sell its premium memory chips at high prices. It should be noted that despite allocating large sums of money for bonuses for employees as per the recent deal on salaries, the company managed to exceed all the expectations of Wall Street.
However, despite this excellent performance, the stock price of Samsung fell a little bit right after the disclosure of the results. It seems like the Wall Street investors are apprehensive about how the current rate of AI infrastructure investments around the world will continue at this pace or if there is going to be some slowdown in the future.
However, the impressive forecast demonstrates a massive change in the IT industry since the companies producing the hardware that builds the AI are now holding all the cards.
